MSR Camaro loses wheel during test

MATT Stone Racing is looking into the cause of a wheel coming loose from Cameron Hill’s #35 Truck Assist Camaro during testing at Queensland Raceway today.

Hill ended up in the gravel off Turn 2, with the front-left wheel having detached itself.

The rookie had been on a flying lap when he detected a potential issue going through the fast Turn 1 right-hander, and was able to slow up enough to avoid any substantial damage.

Team owner Matt Stone was among crew members taken to the scene of the accident, with the wheel being re-fitted before the car was loaded up onto the tilt tray and taken back to pitlane.

“We’re not sure,” Stone told V8 Sleuth when asked what had occurred.

“We had an issue on the left-front corner, something in the wheel or a wheel nut just didn’t quite sync properly which caused the car to end up in the gravel.

“The guys are just going over it.”

The #35, which Hill is sharing with co-driver Jaylyn Robotham, has since returned to the track.

“We’re ticking through the boxes, co-drivers are getting some good laps and some good learning in the Gen3 car,” Stone said of the broader program.

“The test plan is all on-track for Car #34 and obviously just a slight delay with Car #35.”

Meanwhile, Triple Eight is nearing completion on the repair of its #97 Camaro following a brake failure-induced Turn 6 crash for Shane van Gisbergen.

It is on course to turn laps this afternoon in the hands of co-driver Richie Stanaway.
