GREG Murphy is excitedly awaiting the chance to make his debut at legendary British circuit Brands Hatch.
Murphy and Steve Richards will take part in a Super Touring Power event on July 1-2, driving classic cars.
Murphy will be behind the wheel of a Peter Sturgeon-owned Nissan Primera, while Richards will steer a Volvo S40 belonging to Lindsay O’Donnell.
With nine Bathurst 1000 victories between them, the duo have been prominent in the historic scene of late.
Murphy drove a Ford Sierra and Richards a Primera at Supercars’ Pukekohe swansong last September, and both hopped in Nissan Skylines at the recent Phillip Island Classic.
“I’ve never raced at Brands, I think I’ve only been there once to watch racing and that was in the ‘90s,” Murphy told V8 Sleuth.
“It was SuperTourers, I’m pretty sure Steve Richards was actually racing a Primera at the time when I went over there.
“It’s one of those iconic race tracks that everyone knows about and I’m very excited about getting the chance to drive it. I think we get to drive on both the GT and Indy circuit as well.
“I love those cars, they’re great cars and obviously played a big part in the early stages of my career… I’ve driven a few in the last little while as well.
“They’re just really special cars and have got so much history, and I think for a lot of enthusiasts they represent a pretty exciting time in touring car racing.
“The BTCC was just enormous, it was the place that you really needed to be in touring cars to make a name, it was so popular and all the manufacturers were in there.
“It was just a real special period for touring car racing so it’s pretty neat to go to one of the homes in England of Super Touring and do that.”
Murphy was a frontrunner in the Australian Super Touring Championship in 1995 and 1996 before making his full-time Supercars Championship debut the following year for the Holden Racing Team.
