Murphy to farewell Pukekohe with charity hotlaps

THE ultimate way to send off Pukekohe Park Raceway is on the line and it’s all in the name of charity.

An auction has been established centring around the key prize of being the passenger for two hotlaps of the popular New Zealand circuit aboard a Lamborghini Huracan STO.

The driver? None other than the King of Pukekohe himself, Greg Murphy.

The opportunity will take place as part of the Farewell Pukekohe event running March 17-19, as the clock ticks down to the venue’s closure to motorsport at the end of April 2.

Pukekohe opened in 1963 and has a rich motorsport history including hosting the Tasman Series, New Zealand Grand Prix and 15 Supercars Championship events.

Murphy won nine of the first 15 Supercars races there to earn his nickname, while the category bid farewell to the venue in style last September.

There’s no guarantee as to when Supercars will next race across the ditch.

All proceeds from the Murphy hotlap auction will go towards those affected by Cyclone Gabrielle.

New Zealand’s North Island was ravaged by the fatal cyclone last month.

The auction closes on the evening of Monday, March 6.
