MWM buys Tickford Mustang

THE most successful team in Super2 history is set to be a last-minute addition to the 2023 series.

MW Motorsport’s participation in the second tier this year has been a long-running question mark, ever since the decision was made to relegate the Nissan Altima model to Super3 as part of the handing down of Gen2 cars to Super2.

MWM has fielded Altimas since 2017, winning two of its four Super2 titles with the Japanese brand (in 2019 and 2020 with Bryce Fullwood and Thomas Randle respectively).

The team’s previous triumphs came with Jonathon Webb and Dale Wood driving Ford Falcons.

MWM was at one stage thought likely to continue its presence in Super2 by acquiring at least one Gen2 Ford Mustang off Todd Kelly, who owned the trio of cars in Grove Racing’s possession last year.

However, that never came to fruition, leaving team boss Matt White on the outer until striking a deal to purchase a Mustang from Tickford Racing.

White declined to comment on the matter when approached by V8 Sleuth.

Tyler Everingham is considered to be the driver most likely to steer the MWM Mustang, continuing a relationship that dates back to their title-winning 2018 V8 Touring Car Series campaign.

The Nissan raced by Everingham last year has been sold by MWM to Bradley Neill, to be driven by Super3 rookie Cameron McLeod.

MWM has also been linked to a possible Super3 tilt with Jett Johnson, although neither party has commented on those chances since a test day in mid-December.

Neither of Everingham’s 2022 teammates Thomas Maxwell and Angelo Mouzouris have announced plans for the coming season.

The MWM entry will be one of four Tickford-built Mustangs on the 2023 Super2 grid.

Tickford is set to run Brad Vaughan and Elly Morrow in its own cars, while Zane Morse will campaign the former Cam Waters Mustang through his family team.
