NASCAR road courses face clash with Supercars enduros

NEXT year’s Supercars enduros will potentially both clash with NASCAR road course event weekends.

NASCAR released the 2024 calendars overnight for its three national categories, the Cup, Xfinity and Trucks Series.

The premier class Cup Series calendar contains a few significant changes from this year’s schedule, most notably a date shift for the Watkins Glen round.

Traditionally held in August for much of the past four decades, the New York state road circuit will instead move to September 15 to form the second round of the playoffs.

Although Supercars is yet to lock in its 2024 calendar, both the Sandown 500 and Bathurst 1000 would clash with NASCAR road races should both events maintain their traditional dates.

Sandown would now fall on the same weekend as Watkins Glen in mid-September, while the Charlotte Roval round would again take place on the same weekend as the Bathurst 1000.

Both the Watkins Glen and Charlotte Roval weekends feature a double-header with the second-tier Xfinity Series.

Reigning Supercars champion Shane van Gisbergen will move to the United States in 2024 to pursue a career in NASCAR, having signed a development deal with Trackhouse Racing.

The Kiwi’s exact program has yet to be detailed but will include a mix of races across NASCAR’s top three tiers, as well as Late Model and other races, with a focus on getting him acclimatised to oval racing.

Van Gisbergen has previously expressed a desire to return to Supercars as a co-driver with Triple Eight at next year’s endurance races, pending how the 2024 calendars aligned.

Another notable change on NASCAR’s 2024 schedules is the loss of a road course from the Cup and Xfinity Series calendars.

The Indianapolis Motor Speedway event will celebrate its 30th anniversary by reverting back to the oval, following three years of racing on the venue’s road course.

This year’s round featured cameo appearances by both van Gisbergen and Brodie Kostecki, who made his Cup Series debut with Richard Childress Racing at Indy last year.

The Chicago Street Race, which van Gisbergen spectacularly won in his Cup Series debut this year, returns for 2024, with Circuit of The Americas and Sonoma Raceway rounding out the four road course venues on the premier class calendar.

The Xfinity Series will also take in Portland International Raceway among its schedule, while COTA represents the Trucks Series’ only road course event next year.

The only confirmed Supercars date for 2024 is for its return to New Zealand with the inaugural Taupo round on April 19-21.
