Racing return for last ever Gen2 Supercar

THE last pre-Gen3 Supercar to debut in the main game will be wheeled back into action next week.

V8 Sleuth has learnt KR010 will be the chassis in which Aaron Cameron makes his Super2 debut at Sandown.

It’s a landmark opportunity for Cameron, a race-winning driver in TCR and S5000, to try to move up the Supercars pecking order.

The 23-year-old will race a #27 Schramm Group Ford Mustang; it’s believed the car will be run by a mix of people from Kelly Racing and Cameron’s own connections.

While that won’t be the only KR Supercar in the Sandown field, this particular car is special in its own way.

KR010 debuted in October 2021 at the first of four successive Sydney Motorsport Park rounds.

That came as what was then known as Kelly Grove Racing built a new Mustang for Andre Heimgartner. No other Gen2 Supercar has debuted since.

Following Heimgartner and the Kellys’ exit at the end of 2021, the car was run by Grove Racing for Lee Holdsworth last year.

Highlights included an Albert Park podium and a Bathurst 1000 front-row start.

It has not competed since Holdsworth’s final race as a full-timer, at the 2022 Adelaide 500, with Repco Supercars Championship teams switching over to Gen3 machinery this year.

Thus far, Cameron has only announced his entry for Sandown (September 15-17) but he is keen to compete at the subsequent Bathurst and Adelaide rounds too.

He will have an early look at Sandown this weekend, competing there in TCR as part of a Shannons SpeedSeries round.
