S5000 leader to make Super2 debut

AARON Cameron will dip his toes into the world of Supercars with a long-awaited Super2 debut this month at Sandown.

Cameron has for years been a front-runner in S5000 and TCR, and has twice completed Supercars evaluation days with Walkinshaw Andretti United.

The 23-year-old’s Super2 outing will come aboard a Kelly Racing-owned Ford Mustang, which appeared in the main game as recently as last year under the Grove Racing banner.

Carrying the #27 with major backing from the Schramm Group, Cameron will test the car on Wednesday at Winton ahead of the September 15-17 race meeting.

“It’s great to be able to get a start in Super2,” said Cameron.

“This is something I didn’t think was going to be possible after being so close for the last couple of years.

“We have been working really hard to get something together for the second half of the season and I hope Sandown is the start of a permanent spot on the Super2 grid.

“I couldn’t think of a better track to debut at than Sandown. It’s just around the corner from home and I’m sure I will have plenty of family and friends there to support me.

“I’m sure the Melbourne weather will also throw us some curveballs during the weekend as usual, but I’m ready for it!

“There are no big expectations results-wise, there isn’t much time to test in the car prior to the round so we will still be learning on the fly during the weekend. It’s more about learning the car, the tyre and staying out of trouble.

“I just want to get through Sandown for now, then we will reassess for the final two rounds at Bathurst and Adelaide.

“Once we start doing away races the expenses add up and we need to ensure it makes financial sense.

“Without the Schramm Group first committing its support to my debut at Sandown, this would not have been possible and a major thank you to all my other backers for making this happen.”

Zak Best leads the standings at the midway point of the six-round season, holding a 66-point buffer to Eggleston Motorsport teen Kai Allen.
