Rising Supercars talent switches to Trans Am

THE 2023 National Trans Am Series has scored another win, with rising star Jaylyn Robotham joining the field.

Robotham made his Repco Bathurst 1000 debut last year with Matt Chahda Motorsport in a season which also included his maiden Super2 race win.

However, with the 20-year-old set to miss out on a 2023 Super2 seat, he has turned his attention to a different V8-powered series, signing with the newly formed Trans Am team The Racing Academy.

He’ll count Tim Slade as a one-off teammate at the Symmons Plains season-opener later this month, before the Supercars veteran steps aside for teenager Elliott Cleary.

Cody Gillis will round out the three-car Tom Williamson-led squad.

“Trans Am is definitely a good category. It’s got nice, tight racing and it’s very competitive,” said Robotham, who will drive a Ford Mustang.

“I drove these cars in Thailand. The Australian cars are a little bit different, but certainly the V8s on a Hoosier tyre are a lot of fun to drive.

“There are some really strong drivers in Trans Am and I know they’ll be having a crack. For me coming from Super2 last year, it will be interesting to see how it goes.

“Tom is a well-respected driver coach from karting, and he is progressing into cars now. It will be cool for me to have a fresh start with a fresh team.

“I’m looking forward to meeting the team and having a good season.

“Having teammates is definitely an advantage. You can always learn from them, no matter how inexperienced they are. We’ll see how its plays out, but there’s always ways to learn.”

Robotham’s addition to the grid follows news that Garry Rogers Motorsport ace James Moffat will switch from TCR Australia to Trans Am this year.

Moffat will drive the chassis raced last year by two-time champion Nathan Herne, who has since moved to the United States.
