Singapore’s Supercars driver weighs in on event bid

THE only Singapore-born driver to compete in the Supercars era has thrown his support behind the championship’s efforts to race at the island nation.

Christian Murchison lined up in the 2000 and 2007 Supercars enduros, the first coming with Luke Youlden/Perkins Engineering and the latter with Damien White/Brad Jones Racing.

Murchison was twice a Gold Star runner-up, to Simon Wills in 2000 and to Rick Kelly in ’01, was competitive in the 2003 Formula Renault V6 Eurocup, and represented Team Singapore in the 2006/07 A1 Grand Prix season.

While he hasn’t returned to his homeland in decades, Murchison is all for the prospect of a Supercars race in support of Formula 1 at Marina Bay.

The 2024 F1 Singapore Grand Prix is scheduled for September 20-22, making for a possible split endurance season with the Sandown 500 beforehand and Bathurst 1000 afterwards.

“It would be awesome,” Murchison told V8 Sleuth.

“The track is pretty cool. Any time that Supercars get to go international I think is a good thing for them.

“I can’t see why it wouldn’t be a pretty cool thing to do.

“For me, there’s an affinity for both Australia and Singapore and certainly seeing the two come together in some way is nice. Outside of that, I think it would be good for the category.

“Being I think the only Singapore-born V8 Supercar driver, it would be nice to see it there for sure.”

Confessing he’s predominantly an F1 fan, Murchison is nowadays kept busy on multiple fronts in Western Australia.

“I source construction materials out of China and I also supply showers to caravan and RV manufacturers,” he explained.

“And recently I started Stadium Karts as a go-kart experience operating at Optus Stadium.”
