Supercars’ little win in its New Zealand mission

THERE has been a win for the Repco Supercars Championship’s mission to return to racing in New Zealand.

It was widely thought that the dimensions of the new Gen3 Mustangs and Camaros would not fit the racks that have long been used to airfreight Supercars.

That could have made for an exorbitant expense if new racks were required to be built, but V8 Sleuth understands a modification has been settled on to ensure the current equipment remains effective.

It’s believed the modification project will cost a tick under $100,000 in total to widen the old racks – a far cry from the cost of building new ones from scratch.

STRANGE BUT TRUE: HRT, FPR’s shunt on route to the track

The ability to minimise such a cost is important in the scheme of making a New Zealand return stack up financially, as talks continue in the bid to strike a deal with government-operated New Zealand Major Events.

Freight costs had affected Supercars’ trip to Pukekohe last year, for its last ever event at the southern Auckland venue.

That remains the only Supercars round to proceed across the Tasman since COVID-19 hit, although there is hope for a replacement event as soon as 2024.

A Supercars delegation last week flew across to inspect Taupo Motorsport Park, which is considered the slight favourite ahead of fellow Tony Quinn-owned North Island circuit Hampton Downs.

The rack modifications will also come in handy should Supercars successfully manage to secure a berth at an international Formula 1 grand prix such as Singapore or even Saudi Arabia.
