TCR champ scores McLaren drive

REIGNING TCR Australia Series winner Josh Buchan will be on double-duties at the next round of the SpeedSeries at Phillip Island on April 12-14.

The 29-year-old will switch between his regular Hyundai i30 N mount and a McLaren Artura GT4 as he contests the opening round of the new Monochrome GT4 Australia Series.

Buchan is set to co-drive with Jason Yu for Sydney-based team DNA Autosport throughout the GT4 season.

The team has experience across multiple categories including Porsche Michelin Sprint Challenge, Toyota 86s and World Time Attack.

“It’s very exciting to join the brand-new GT4 category,” said Buchan.

“The field sounds like it is going to be very competitive. There are some amazing cars and drivers from the lists I’ve seen.

“GT4 cars are awesome. These cars are the halo cars of the brands, so it makes it really exciting to be involved from the start.”

Buchan drove the new McLaren during a recent shakedown at Phillip Island.

“I probably only did half a dozen laps, but even in that short period it was intuitive to drive. It wasn’t intimidating and it was a dream straight away,” he said.

“You buy these cars, take it to the track and rip it straight away. It ran faultlessly in our shakedown and I expect it to do the same all year.”

The Buchan/Yu combination will contest the Pro-Am Class of the GT4 series.

“Jason and I have been friends for some time now, we’re going to have a great time doing this,” Buchan explained.

“It’s quite unique to be able to go racing with your mate, so I feel quite privileged to do that.

“I’ve been part of the process of getting the car too. We took delivery from Zagame in Melbourne, and they have been terrific.

“All the organisational stuff and the ease of taking delivery from Rod Wilson … It’s a team that knows motorsport.

“They made the whole experience exceptional and they’ve been a pleasure to deal with.”
