V8s to race at Ipswich

THE revived V8 Touring Car Series will make an unexpected stop at Ipswich as a knock-on effect of a calendar reshuffle.

Round 3 of the Kumho-backed category was due to be held as part of the Shannons SpeedSeries bill at Sydney Motorsport Park in June.

However, that event has now been shifted to early November to coincide with its newfound status as Round 7 of the TCR World Tour.

V8TC has responded by switching out SMP for Queensland Raceway, joining the SpeedSeries event scheduled there for August 11-13.

That will make for a rare opportunity to see V8 Supercar machinery compete in anger at Ipswich, which last hosted a Supercars Championship race in 2019 (but does continue to be a regular test track).

All pre-Car of the Future Supercars are eligible to race in V8TC.

“The Sydney Shannons SpeedSeries round moving to November would have resulted in back-to-back rounds for V8 Touring Cars competitors,” said Australian Racing Group chief operating officer Liam Curkpatrick.

“Given it’s only a five-round series, we have elected to shift the third round to Queensland Raceway in August.

“This allows for similar separation between rounds in the 2023 calendar, and a solid break between Sandown and the final round at the Supercheap Auto Bathurst International in November.

“Queensland Raceway has always produced entertaining, competitive racing in the V8 Touring Car Series and we’re excited to have the series as part of that massive Shannons SpeedSeries event in August.”

Confirmed entries for the series include Jude Bargwanna and Tony Evangelou in ex-Ford Performance Racing Falcons.
