Wall penalised after Porsche pile-up

FORMER Porsche Carrera Cup Australia champ David Wall has been penalised in the wake of the multi-car pile-up that brought Race 2 on the Gold Coast on Sunday to an early finish under a red flag.

Wall had been battling with Alex Davison on the run into Turn 11 and moved across as the latter made a move to pass on the inside.

The two made contact that spun Wall and a range of cars ploughed in to create an even bigger accident in the moments that followed.

Davison, who drives for Scott Taylor Motorsport, was aggrieved by Wall’s driving and approached the former Supercars racer in his stricken Porsche in the aftermath of the accident before slamming the driver’s side door shut.

Wall was given a post-race 34-second time penalty that moved him back to 20th outright in the results, which were backdated to the completion of lap 21 given the race was red-flagged.

The Stewards Report of the round noted that, “The DSA provided advice that Car 38 (Wall) moved to the left in the braking zone to counter a move by Car 222 (Davison) and then kept moving to the left whilst in the braking zone until contact was made with Car 222 resulting in Car 38 losing control.

“The Stewards imposed a post-race penalty of 34 seconds (the equivalent of a Drive Through Penalty) to the Race 2 time of Car 38 for a breach of the Motorsport Australia Circuit Race Standing Regulations – Article 6.2.13: A Driver defending their position on a straight, and before any braking area, may use the full width of the Track during their first move provided no portion of an Automobile attempting to pass is alongside their Automobile. Any movement to defend a position in the braking area is prohibited and once in the braking area the trajectory of the defending Automobile must remain parallel to the solid line defining the Track edge.”

Queensland young gun Bayley Hall won the round, becoming the seventh different round winner from seven rounds of the Porsche Paynter Dixon Carrera Cup Australia held this year.

He won both races on the Sunday, while Jackson Walls now leads the championship by 21 points over Callum Hedge with one round remaining in Adelaide.

Adrian Flack won the round in the SP Tools Pro-Am class and now leads Sam Shahin by 15 points with Dean Cook a further eight behind in third place.
