Waters exploring 2023 American racing cameo

CAM Waters could well join the wave of Supercars stars trying their hand in the United States before the year is up.

Shane van Gisbergen is making his NASCAR Cup Series debut this weekend in Chicago, and Brodie Kostecki is working on a deal to follow suit.

Ford star Waters attended the NASCAR race at Martinsville Speedway in April and is eyeing a maiden chance to compete in the US as soon as this year – albeit not necessarily in the Cup Series.

“It’s awesome that Shane has gone over there and is doing the street race,” Waters told V8 Sleuth.

“It’s something that I’m pretty keen on, trying to race overseas and in America in particular so I’m kind of exploring a few different categories and things that I could do this year.

“Nothing is locked away but working on a couple of things.”

Asked what series he was targeting, Waters replied: “We’re looking at all different things from sprintcars over there to ARCA Truck even to Cup but probably more going to be along the lines of sprintcars or one of the lower levels.

“For me, I just want to try to go overseas and do some racing and have a bit of fun on the side to break up the Supercar year a little bit and just continue racing something different which should complement what I’m doing here.”

The Mildura product has become a familiar face in Australian sprintcar circles, including racing at Archerfield Speedway’s last ever event earlier this month.

The clear centrepiece of the Supercars silly season, Waters admitted a full-time overseas move is in his future plans – but he still has unfinished business Down Under.

“One day I can see myself moving overseas to race, but a lot of things would have to happen for that,” said Waters.

“It’s not my number one priority; my number one priority is to win a championship here at the moment.”
