Waters leads Ford one-two in Gold Coast qualifying

MUSTANG drivers Cam Waters and Matt Payne scored a one-two for the Blue Oval in Saturday qualifying at the Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500.

A 15-minute session set the field for the Top 10 Shootout, as well as grid positions 11 through 25 ahead of the afternoon’s 250km race.

Tickford star Waters moved to the top of the order with 1:10.8566s just prior to the halfway mark before lowering it further to 1:10.8361s in the dying moments.

“I kept getting kerb strikes at the start and just had to get a banker in and the banker was pretty good,” said Waters, who ran down the Turn 9 escape road early in the session.

“My car is pretty nice to drive, it’s just hard to get through those chicanes. But it’s the same for everyone.”

Grove Racing’s Payne fell just 0.0503s short with his final effort for second, while fourth for Tickford’s Thomas Randle underlined a strong session for the Mustangs.

Randle split title contenders Brodie Kostecki and Shane van Gisbergen, the latter recovering from near the bottom of the order mid-session after copping a dreaded kerb strike.

Their respective teammates Will Brown and Broc Feeney had shockers.

Feeney will start just 21st after losing his best lap to a kerb strike, while Brown was 25th after even bigger issues.

“I’m not sure what happened there. I had a problem yesterday at the end of practice, we pitted and did a lot of stuff,” said Brown.

“The boys worked really hard last night to try and find it. It seemed like it was in the gearbox or motor.

“We went out there and it did it again, I don’t have any gears just then. Not ideal, it’s going to make this one hard for us this afternoon.”

The remainder of the Shootout field is made up of Scott Pye, David Reynolds, Tim Slade, Chaz Mostert and Andre Heimgartner.

Pye made the Shootout despite a clout of the Turn 3 tyre barrier in the closing stages.

The Top 10 Shootout is scheduled for 1:05pm local time.
