WAU prodigy set for first Gen3 Supercar laps

KIWI young gun Ryan Wood is set to turn his first laps in a Gen3 Supercar this week.

V8 Sleuth has learnt Wood is scheduled to complete a driver evaluation day with Walkinshaw Andretti United at Winton on Wednesday.

The outing will come aboard a WAU Ford Mustang, a day after the team runs a test day for main game regulars Nick Percat and Chaz Mostert.

Wood has emerged as one of the brightest talents in the Supercars pipeline, after grabbing a pole position in his maiden Super2 round in Newcastle and then winning both Perth races.

In the wake of his Wanneroo Raceway heroics, Wood has shot into the frame as a player in the Repco Supercars Championship silly season.

The 19-year-old has been linked to a full-time 2024 drive at either WAU or Team 18.

Wood starred last year in Porsche Michelin Sprint Challenge, although the title narrowly went Tom Sargent’s way.

He subsequently opted to snub a guaranteed graduation to Porsche Carrera Cup Australia via the Team Porsche New Zealand scholarship to instead join WAU in the Supercars feeder series.

Wood is not the only former Porsche protégé to have been called up for a Supercars evaluation this year, Erebus Motorsport having announced a similar opportunity for Cooper Murray in May.

Tickford Racing will also be testing tomorrow at Winton.
