Where has this Bathurst 12 Hour pole-winning Porsche popped up?

WHAT happens to GT3 race cars after they have finished racing at the top level of international GT competition?

Well, it seems they go to all sorts of places!

This week our interest was piqued by a 2019 Porsche 911 GT3 R that has appeared in an online auction on the US-based website, Bring A Trailer.

It’s not just any 2019 GT3 R either, it’s the very chassis that Matt Campbell took to pole position for the 2020 Bathurst 12 Hour that he shared to finish fourth overall in that year’s race with Mathieu Jaminet and Patrick Pilet.

Campbell set a 2m03.5554s lap in the Saturday Shootout to top the times for pole position and the #911 Absolute Racing Porsche led six of the 314 laps on race day, finishing just under 46 seconds behind the winning Bentley.

The pole marked the first for a Porsche at the Bathurst 12 Hour and came the year after Campbell had famously sliced his way to victory in the 2019 race.

There’s a special feature on all Bathurst 12 Hour pole sitters in the GT era in the 2024 Repco Bathurst 12 Hour Official Program, it’s available to order online here or can be purchased from the Official Merchandise outlets at the track.

According to the Bring A Trailer listing the car was run by the Shanghai-based Absolute team and was then imported to the United States in 2022 and acquired by the current owner.

It’s since appeared in several Historic Sports Car Racing and Rennsport Reunion events and remains in its #911 kangaroo livery.

The car is among those featured in our ‘Bathurst Going Global’ book covering the first 10 years of the GT era of the Bathurst 12 Hour, including an image of every car from every year of the race.

The book is on sale here now at a special reduced price in the V8 Sleuth Superstore.
