Whincup’s stern response to renewed parity claims

JAMIE Whincup is taking a no-nonsense approach to the latest Supercars parity push from the Ford camp.

While it’s generally accepted that aero parity has been reached, concerns became increasingly apparent during the Melbourne SuperSprint that the 5.4-litre Coyote engine is outgunned in high-gear performance by its 5.7-litre General Motors counterpart.

All 12 podium placings across the Albert Park event went to Chevrolet drivers, although James Courtney and Will Davison both took second-place finishes before copping penalties.

Supercars has spent the past two days conducting Centre of Gravity testing with various Ford and Chevrolet teams, and Whincup did not mince his words when the topic of parity was put to him again.

“From what I can see, the parity has never been better,” Triple Eight’s managing director told V8 Sleuth.

“The stuff we did at VCAT and even the on-track stuff has been extremely good.”

Whincup went further to voice his frustration that parity is perhaps being confused with Balance of Performance (as is used in TCR and GT racing).

“You have just got to remember, we don’t paritise teams – you paritise cars, not teams,” he continued.

“So don’t get carried away with one team isn’t going as well as another team, that’s completely irrelevant information, it should be disregarded.

“And the second thing is, we don’t run BoP. We’re not a sport that runs Balance of Performance like GT racing, we don’t weigh down the guy or girl that’s winning.

“We’re not horse racing, we’re not BoP, we are everyone gets the same opportunity and you go flat out.

“And that’s what draws me into Supercars, that’s what I love about Supercars.

“The day that changes is the day I’ll disappear because I’m not interested in trying to paritise between teams in the Supercars Championship.”

Supercars has three-plus weeks now to sort multiple issues, also including the fires seen at Albert Park, before Round 3 at Wanneroo Raceway.
