Triple Eight protest hearing concluded

MOTORSPORT Australia has announced the verdict of a protest against Triple Eight Race Engineering will be handed down on Sunday morning.

It was revealed earlier tonight that a protest had been lodged against Triple Eight after it had stormed to a commanding one-two in the opening race of the 2023 Repco Supercars Championship at Newcastle.

“Motorsport Australia can confirm protests were received from Tickford Racing against cars 88 (Broc Feeney) and 97 (Shane van Gisbergen), and Walkinshaw Andretti United against 97,” read a statement.

“The Deputy Race Directors also alleged a technical breach of C16.2 regarding the Driver Cooling System on cars 88 and 97.

“A Stewards Hearing has now concluded, with Stewards now deliberating.

“A decision will be handed down tomorrow morning.”

Rule C16.2 reads: “Any Driver cooling system that contains a cooling medium must be… mounted within the cockpit utilising the mounting points designated in the GSD for the passenger seat.”

Seemingly contrary to that, broadcast footage showed Triple Eight tipping dry ice into both of its Camaros via the driver’s side door at their respective second pitstops.

Triple Eight uses an electric ChillOut system for its driver cool suits but is believed to have run a secondary dry ice unit to supply cool air to its drivers.
