DJR prodigy laps up British F3 opportunity

SUPERCARS star of the future Kai Allen has enjoyed an opportunity to try his hand in Formula 3 machinery abroad.

Allen is one of the hottest talents in Australian motorsport, the 18-year-old gunning for the 2023 Super2 title as well as being the centrepiece of Dick Johnson Racing’s upcoming Bathurst 1000 wildcard alongside Simona De Silvestro.

And he’s only recently returned from a test at Pembrey Circuit in Wales.

It represented Allen’s first open-wheel experience besides an Australian Formula Ford test.

“We did two, two-day tests in the Dallara F3 with a team called Double R Racing, which is really cool and learnt a lot,” he told V8 Sleuth.

“I had a lot of opportunities with new tyres and everything so got good experience and hopefully I can do some more stuff over there.

“But it was just to see how I go, I’ve never got to drive an open-wheeler before so getting in one of those is a lot different to the Supercar.

“Just finetuning the craft and everything was really cool, and back into a Supercar now, so it’s happened pretty fast, it’s been good.”

While keen to continue expanding his horizons, Allen laughed he’s not about to abandon Supercars.

“It was just good to get over there and have a drive of something different,” he said.

“An opportunity came up so I took it with both hands and it’s just good to drive as much as I can.”

A busy six weeks awaits.

“I had a (Super2) test day the other day which went really well,” he said.

“It’s good just to jump back into the Supercar and come to grips with things because it’s a bit different to the F3, so I had to work how to drive it again.

“We’ll have a good crack at Sandown and then onto Bathurst with double duties will be really cool.

“I’ve got a couple of test days coming up in the Gen3 so try to get as much as I can out of them and then eyes forward to Sandown and Bathurst.”

Allen (Eggleston Motorsport) trails Super2 leader Zak Best (Anderson Motorsport) by 66 points with three rounds remaining this season.
