Downforce rebalanced after Temora parity test

SUPERCARS is set to announce a parity tweak just days before the season-opening Thrifty Newcastle 500.

Straight-line aero testing took place last week at Temora in response to Ford’s persisting concerns about differences between its Gen3 Mustang and the rival Chevrolet Camaro.

Those concerns had become increasingly public throughout February, starting with Ford Performance global director Mark Rushbrook opening up during the Bathurst 12 Hour event.

Then, a lopsided leaderboard at the Sydney Motorsport Park pre-season test caused a stir, with Ford drivers and teams pleading for a solution while suggestions of sandbagging emerged from the Chevrolet side.

V8 Sleuth understands a change has been agreed upon following Temora.

That is supposedly a rebalancing of the Camaro’s aero package, shifting downforce from rear to front.

Ford’s aero concerns had centred around not the overall downforce number, but rather a balance difference which many believed would make the Mustang fast over a single lap but vulnerable across a race distance.

Supercars has yet to comment on the matter but is expected to do so in due course.

There has also been work done post-SMP on the engine side, with new maps reportedly trialled at Winton last Wednesday.

The category has further now set a minimum weight figure, at 1335kg (without fuel) including 725kg over the front axle.
