New pitstop rules for Supercars at Newcastle 500

ANOTHER key detail has been confirmed in the run to Round 1 of the 2023 Repco Supercars Championship, with the minimum fuel drop revealed for Newcastle’s two races.

Supercars head of motorsport Adrian Burgess had indicated in December that the fuel drop concept would remain in place as a tactical tool in the overall show.

However, the new 100-litre figure is vastly different to last year, slashed from 140.

That is likely, at least in part, due to the fact the Gen3 Supercars carry bigger capacity fuel cells, up from 111 litres into the vicinity of 133-134, as Burgess said during the Adelaide 500.

Thus, cars can start with more of the BP E75 product onboard and need less of a top up mid-race to make it home.

Although the fuel drop requirement is less than the size of the tank, rules require cars to pit at least twice for tyre changes during each 250km race.

Another factor to consider in terms of refuelling is the reportedly slower fill times which will be experienced in Gen3.

Refuelling races will take place at seven of the 12 rounds this year, namely Newcastle, Townsville, Sydney Motorsport Park, Sandown, Bathurst, Gold Coast and Adelaide.
