First to 250: Triple Eight’s milestone wins

TRIPLE Eight celebrated the 20th anniversary of its Supercars Championship debut at the Sandown 500 with its 250th race win.

It’s the first team in Australian Touring Car/Supercars Championship history to achieve the feat, having been the benchmark of the competition for much of the last two decades.

The team’s Supercars history is chronicled in V8 Sleuth’s recently released book, Triple Eight: The Cars, 2003-2023.

Totalling 416 pages and featuring insight from the key players and never-before-published images, it’s available now from the V8 Sleuth Superstore.

Win #1

Craig Lowndes, Eastern Creek – May 29, 2005

After a rough 2004, Triple Eight made two key moves for the following season, signing star driver Lowndes and replacing its in-house engines with that from Stone Brothers Racing.

It was obvious from the start of the season that a maiden win was only a matter of time, and the drought was broken when Lowndes beat Marcos Ambrose home in Race 2 at Eastern Creek.

Win #50

Jaime Whincup, Barbagallo Raceway – November 21, 2009

Fast-forward to 2009 and new Triple Eight star Jamie Whincup was racing to a second straight drivers’ title aboard a Vodafone-backed, FG model Falcon.

He chalked up the team’s 50th win in the Saturday race at the penultimate round of the season at Barbagallo. It was the first win for Triple Eight in Western Australia.

Win #100

Triple Eight reached the ton early in the first season for the Car of the Future regulations, for which it fielded two new VF model Commodores in Red Bull colours.

The team’s milestone at Barbagallo was a footnote to Lowndes’ own story, as this race win gave him a career total of 91, moving him clear of Mark Skaife at the top of the all-time winners’ list.

Win #150

Shane van Gisbergen, Reid Park Street Circuit – July 10, 2016

Then first-year Triple Eight driver van Gisbergen recorded the team’s 150th midway through 2016, as his charge to an eventual championship victory began to ramp up.

After a start to the year in which eight different teams won in the first 12 races, Triple Eight drivers won 14 of the remaining 17.

Van Gisbergen also had the honour of clinching Triple Eight’s double ton, doing so in the second of back-to-back rounds at Townsville in the pandemic-hit 2020 season.

The Kiwi bounced back from power steering trouble in the Saturday race to score the milestone, before adding a 201st win later in the afternoon.

Triple Eight’s new-gen star teamed with the ‘GOAT’ for Triple Eight’s 250th, achieved in the first endurance race for the Gen3 specification cars.

The team is comfortably on top of the all-time win tally, with HRT/WAU (188 wins), DJR/DJRTP (148 wins), Tickford/PRA/FPR (81 wins) and the defunct Kmart/HSVDT (50 wins) the top five.
