GTWC Australia introduces unique Top 10 Shootout

A TOP 10 Shootout will be added as part of the spectacle for GT World Challenge Australia’s visit to Queensland Raceway next month.

For the first time in category history, the fastest 10 entries from Qualifying 2 will proceed to a shootout, run one-by-one.

There’s a twist, with Pro drivers contesting Qualifying 2, but the shootout reserved for the nominated Am driver in each car.

That session will then set the grid for Race 2; the first of the weekend’s hour-long races will be determined as per usual by Qualifying 1.

“Top 10 Shootouts are a fantastic tradition in our sport and there’s no difference when contested by GT cars,” said Australian Racing Group head of category operations Ben McMellan.

“The difference here is that we’ll be giving the Amateur drivers a chance to strut their stuff while the Pros sit and watch from the sidelines.

“It’s the reverse of the norm, but we felt it a great opportunity to give the Ams a chance to experience something they usually have to watch.

“It’s something different in Fanatec GT World Challenge competition and we’re looking forward to the show at Queensland Raceway this August.”

GT will be one of six categories on the Shannons SpeedSeries bill at Ipswich, the others being TCR Australia, National Trans Am, Porsche Michelin Sprint Challenge, the Kumho V8 Touring Car Series, and the combined Australian Production Cars/GT4 Australia Series.

The full track schedule for the August 11-13 event can be viewed here.

In addition to comprehensive Stan Sport coverage, there will be a free-to-air window on 9Gem from 2-5pm on the Saturday (August 12) taking in races for Trans Am, GT and TCR.
