How van Gisbergen can win 2022 Supercars title at Bathurst

SHANE van Gisbergen can today become the first driver in 20 years to mathematically seal a Supercars championship at Bathurst.

The Red Bull Ampol Racing star enters the 2022 Great Race with a 525-point buffer in hand to Cameron Waters.

As it stands, 900 points are still up for grabs this season, meaning Will Davison (602 behind), Anton De Pasquale (669) and Chaz Mostert (778) are also technically still in the hunt.

But by the close of play, they will need to be less than 600 points behind van Gisbergen, given SVG’s race win tally this year means any tiebreaker would fall his way.

Victory today would make the situation most straightforward for the Kiwi – in which case he’d become a three-time champion (excluding the possibility of penalty points) as long as Waters doesn’t join him on the Bathurst podium.

The lower van Gisbergen places today, the more chance there is for the title fight to go to the Gold Coast later this month.

Mark Skaife was the last driver to put a Supercars championship beyond doubt at Mount Panorama, in 2002.
