HRT Bathurst 1000 winner tackles Laguna Seca

A BATHURST 1000-winning Supercar has spent the weekend racing at legendary American circuit Laguna Seca with McLaren CEO Zak Brown behind the wheel.

WR 014, which is owned by Brown, was entered in the Velocity International event in California.

Competing in the Group 9 class for IMSA/ALMS GT, LMGT and production cars from 1995 to 2012, Brown started the feature race sixth and finished fifth.

“Fun race, thought I could have had fourth but wasn’t brave enough,” reflected Brown, who is a co-owner at Supercars squad Walkinshaw Andretti United.

“Great day, great weekend hanging out with Mario Andretti, Mika Hakkinen, Tanner Foust, Pato O’Ward, all of the McLaren guys and a special shoutout to the United team who did a great job all weekend (at Portimao).”

Each of the aforementioned quartet were in action aboard historic vehicles, with McLaren F1 championship-winning models the MP4/5 (1989) and MP4/2B (1985) among the fleet.

As for WR 014, it was driven to victory in the 2011 Bathurst 1000 by Garth Tander and Nick Percat – the Walkinshaw organisation’s last Holden factory supported triumph in the Great Race.

Brown was in attendance at the 2022 Repco Bathurst 1000, in which Chaz Mostert and Fabian Coulthard placed second for WAU behind only Shane van Gisbergen and Tander (now of Triple Eight Race Engineering).
