Kostecki rules out imminent NASCAR switch

BRODIE Kostecki has confirmed his intention to make further NASCAR cameos but is adamant that he isn’t about to follow Shane van Gisbergen into a full-time move Stateside.

Supercars championship leader Kostecki qualified 11th of 39 on Cup Series debut last weekend in Indianapolis, only to be sent to the rear of field at race start due to required repairs.

From there, he solidly worked his way forward to 22nd, finishing on the lead lap.

“He genuinely qualified 11th within three laps of being in a Cup car,” Erebus Motorsport CEO Barry Ryan said yesterday.

“He put in a massive effort over there like we did in the background, George (Commins) put a big effort in with the engineering team over there, and they (Richard Childress Racing) are really excited about their road course program now because I think we have helped them and contributed with how we do things.

“Watkins Glen this week, I know Kyle (Busch) is really excited about that.

“I’m sure Brodie is busting to get over there and do a bit more stuff.”

Speaking on the Fox Sports broadcast this morning, Kostecki described it as “the journey of a lifetime” but declared Supercars is his home for the foreseeable future.

“I really enjoy racing Supercars,” said Kostecki, who will have Jack Le Brocq as his 2024 teammate at Erebus.

“This is my home at least for a few more years.

“I have definitely got a lot more boxes I want to tick here first before I go over there.

“I did enjoy the experience and hopefully I get another one, to do a few cameos in the next few years and we’ll see what happens.

“But I love racing Supercars here and I’m more than happy to be home.”

Kostecki was ninth fastest in Practice 1 at The Bend as Ford dominated the early proceedings.

Final practice starts at 11:40am local time (12:10pm AEST).
