Kostecki’s chance to match Lowndes, Whincup

CRAIG Lowndes and Jamie Whincup; they’re the two most prolific winners in ATCC/Supercars history.

So, not bad company for Brodie Kostecki to potentially be joining come Sunday night.

To date, Lowndes and Whincup are the only drivers ever to have chalked up three consecutive round wins before their 26th birthday.

For all the success Lowndes enjoyed in the early stages of his career, he only went three-on-the-trot once before age 26: in his rookie season, at the Lakeside, Wanneroo and Mallala rounds in 1996.

Whincup actually went one better at the age of 25, winning four rounds in a row in 2008: Bathurst, Gold Coast, Bahrain and Symmons Plains.

Kostecki enters this weekend’s Ned Whisky Tasmania SuperSprint in red-hot form, with a 100-point championship lead in hand.

While round wins are no longer officially awarded, the #99 Erebus Motorsport driver did accumulate the most points across both the Albert Park and Wanneroo events.

The 25-year-old’s birthday isn’t until November 1, but his time is now to try to join two of the category’s all-time greats in a rare section of the history books.

Coincidentally, perhaps his biggest threat to doing so will be Lowndes and Whincup’s Triple Eight teammate Shane van Gisbergen.

Kostecki and van Gisbergen duked it out in a thrilling Perth exchange which boiled over into a subsequent protest, setting the scene for what could be Supercars’ newest rivalry.

Supercars action at Symmons Plains begins with practice on Saturday morning.
