Mostert sensing old-school barnburner at Taupō

FRIDAY fast man Chaz Mostert believes Supercars racing at Taupō will be chaotic and action-packed following first impressions gathered today.

Mostert compared the abrasive Taupō track surface to that of Wanneroo prior to its resurfacing in the 2018/19 summer, and feels that will be to the benefit of the racing product.

“I tell you what, this race if it is dry tomorrow or Sunday, it’s going to be interesting,” he said on the Fox Sports broadcast.

“So if you’re at home and you haven’t quite dialled in yet, make sure you tune in because there is going to be a lot of degradation out there and a lot of great racing.

“The engineers in the garage here are going to have their work cut out for them, so I’m looking forward to it.

“It’s like an old Supercars race, which it’s felt like we haven’t had for a little while, so it’s going to be cool.”

Mostert explained that tyre degradation had had a severe impact on pace dropping off during practice stints.

“The lap times we started on the same set of tyres to where we ended up taking them off and saying they’re absolutely done is a lot of time (difference),” he said.

“Racing will be very interesting, who can look after their tyres the best.

“I don’t expect there will be much follow-the-leader out there, you’re going to have cars trying to go around the outside, cars trying to go around the inside, dirt, dust.

“It’s really cool and old-school so I’m looking forward to it.”

A pair of 60-lap races will unfold across the weekend, starting at 1:05pm AEST (3:05pm local) on each of Saturday and Sunday.

Rain is forecast in the region tomorrow.
