NASCAR powerhouse acquires a Supercar

THE trend of ex-Supercars ending up in the United States of America continues following a revelation that NASCAR powerhouse team Richard Childress Racing is the latest to acquire a car from Down Under.

A plain white VF Commodore V8 Supercar was photographed by an American-based Twitter user and published on the platform a few days ago.

V8 Sleuth has confirmed with Image Racing boss Terry Wyhoon that one of his former Super2 VF Commodore race cars is now in the United States.

Further investigation shows the destination for the car is RCR – the team that runs Austin Dillon and Kyle Busch in the NASCAR Cup Series and was made famous by the late Dale Earnhardt.

RCR has won 16 NASCAR Championships and over 200 races (including three Daytona 500s) since it was founded in 1969.

Based in Welcome, North Carolina, the team imported a racing car from Image Racing to the United States in late February this year.

Testing for NASCAR Cup Series teams is extremely limited, so some have taken to sourcing other types of similar cars for their drivers to run on road courses in other non-NASCAR race events and private test days.

Last year, as reported by V8 Sleuth, a former DJR modified Supercar was spotted testing at Watkins Glen with Penske NASCAR pilots Joey Logano and Ryan Blaney taking turns behind the wheel.

The Commodore sourced from Image is a Walkinshaw Racing-built Commodore VF that was used by Jay Robotham in last year’s Dunlop Super2 Series.

It was originally a Holden Racing Team car driven by Garth Tander and later spent time with Erebus Motorsport before going to Wyhoon’s Image team.

Image has retained its other VF Commodore – also an ex-WR car – for young gun Jobe Stewart to drive in this year’s Dunlop Super3 Series.
