New marque coming to TCR Australia

THE 2023 TCR Australia Series will be boosted by the addition of a new marque.

V8 Sleuth has learnt the Cupra Leon TCR model will join the field, likely in the hands of privateer Michael Clemente.

That further enhances the diverse nature of the competition, with seven different manufacturers having raced last year Down Under: Alfa Romeo, Audi, Honda, Hyundai, Peugeot, Renault and Volkswagen.

Cupra is not new to the world of TCR.

The Spanish brand was a race winner in WTCR last year, Robert Huff delivering wins in Portugal and France.

It also made a one-off Australian appearance in 2019, driven by Tim Brook at The Bend Motorsport Park.

More details about its introduction to the Australian series are still to come, including whether it will feature on the grid at next month’s Race Tasmania event at Symmons Plains.

Clemente last year switched from Honda to Audi ahead of the final round at Mount Panorama.

He has been a regular figure in TCR Australia since the start of the 2021 season.
