Payne to race in 12 Hours of Sepang

GROVE Racing Supercars young gun Matt Payne is set to collect more international experience, lining up in this month’s 12 Hours of Sepang.

V8 Sleuth understands Payne will join team co-owners Stephen and Brenton Grove at the March 14-16 event, which falls one weekend before Round 2 of the Supercars season at Albert Park.

Payne and the Groves will share a Mercedes-AMG GT3, after the team opted to cut its long-standing ties with Porsche.

The Groves have two Mercs in their possession; a brand-new car based overseas, and an ex-Harrolds Volante Rosso Motorsport entry which remains in Australia. The Groves are tipped to field the latter in GT World Challenge Australia this year.

As for Payne, he already has some marquee GT3 races under his belt, including the 24 Hours of Spa, Circuit Paul Ricard 1000km, 12 Hours of Mugello, and most recently the Dubai 24 Hour.

The Groves tend to rotate through Pro drivers, with Supercars recruit Richie Stanaway having joined them at the Gulf 12 Hours in Abu Dhabi late last year.

Grove Racing is second in the 2024 Supercars teams’ championship following a solid Bathurst 500 outing for both Payne and Stanaway.

Payne is taking part in a Supercars rookie test today at Winton.
