‘Pretty wild’: Record broken in Albert Park opener

A TRIO of new-generation stars reset the record for the youngest-ever Repco Supercars Championship podium in the opening race at Albert Park.

Race-winner Broc Feeney (21), runner-up Will Brown (25) and third-placed Matt Payne (21) made for a podium-average age of just 22 years and 327 days.

It undercut the record of 23 years and 234 days set at Wanneroo last April, where Feeney, Brown and Brodie Kostecki shared the dais.

That trio had beaten a record that stood since the opening round of the 2006 season, achieved by Jamie Whincup, Todd Kelly and Rick Kelly.

Proving the true force of the latest generation change, the four youngest-ever podium results have now occurred in the last 12 months.

It’s a movement not lost on third-year Supercars Championship driver Feeney, who took the championship lead from Brown with today’s victory.

“It’s awesome to see people giving young drivers a shot, obviously what my team did with myself and what Groves did with Matty,” he said.

“It just seems so similar to what I went through 12 to 18 months ago, he wins Adelaide and then comes out and has a great start to the year.

“Will now is the old guy here, he’s actually pushing the age up!

“It’s unreal to think that 25, 21, 21…  pretty wild to be sitting up here.”

Payne is fourth in the championship after three races behind Feeney, Brown and 31-year-old Chaz Mostert.

The remainder of the top 10 consists of Nick Percat (35), Richie Stanaway (32), David Reynolds (38), Thomas Randle (27), Jack Le Brocq (31) and Bryce Fullwood (25).
