AARON Seton is drawing on a newfound relationship with Triple Eight Race Engineering in a bid to keep his Supercars career progressing.
The 2019 TA2 Muscle Car Series champion is in his third Super2 season, now representing the start-up Gomersall Motorsport squad which has broken away from Matt Stone Racing.
It was with MSR that Seton that made his Repco Bathurst 1000 debut last year, placing 14th alongside Jack Le Brocq.
But with precious few co-drives still up for grabs – MSR has retained Jayden Ojeda and is looking set to sign Jaylyn Robotham – Seton has turned his attention to challenging at the pointy end of Super2.
Two rounds in, he’s eighth in the standings.
The 24-year-old has identified qualifying as his achilles heel – and that’s where the Triple Eight starpower comes in.
Having already this year leaned on Shane van Gisbergen at a test day, Seton had Jamie Whincup hop in his #30 ZB Commodore at Queensland Raceway on Thursday.
“To be able to get the access to those guys at T8 is awesome,” Seton told V8 Sleuth.
“Definitely you can’t put a value on how much that helps us as a team at GMS to be able to develop.
“Those guys are who the cars are designed around and they know how to win races and to drive them how they’re designed to be driven, so it’s definitely experience that is amazing for me as a driver to be able to develop in the best way possible.
“It has helped so much… we’re focusing on our qualifying procedure at the moment, trying to get that right.
“(Whincup) has got a lot of years’ experience with the Dunlop hard tyre and being able to switch that tyre on, obviously he got a lot of pole positions in his career, so that’s an area that I’m working on.
“We definitely learnt a lot (on Thursday) around that area so that’s what we’re working towards going into Townsville.”
Seton has gained places in every race this season, but is yet to start from higher than 12th.
Round 3 at Townsville is his next opportunity, with that event scheduled for July 7-9.
