Supercars approves Gen3 chassis strengthening

SUPERCARS has taken action on making its Gen3 chassis more robust following concerns out of the opening two rounds of the season.

It had become widely accepted that the new Mustang and Camaro are more fragile than the Gen2 Supercars.

Eyebrows were initially raised when not only could Tickford Racing not get James Courtney’s car repaired in time for Race 2 at Newcastle, but they had to send it interstate to Pace Innovations post-event.

There were then several cases of major damage from varying levels of incidents at Albert Park.

Perhaps most surprising of all was that Shane van Gisbergen was forced out of Practice 2 following what was a spectacular but seemingly innocuous mishap in the opening session.

Various team owners have expressed concerns, but also confidence that a solution would be reached.

The first step, at least, has now been ticked off following meetings between the Technical Working Group on Wednesday and the Supercars Commission yesterday.

The changes approved include the allowance for teams to add gusseting to the mounts on the chassis clips.

V8 Sleuth understands that measure is optional and does require significant effort, but is expected to make a substantial difference.

Multiple teams have already begun work to put the gusseting in place ahead of the Perth SuperSprint.

Round 3 at Wanneroo Raceway takes place across April 28-30.

The length of that trip across the Nullarbor does shorten the pre-event timeframe for such work to be undertaken though, with transporters needing to be packed well in advance.
