Supercars makes practice sessions tweaks ‘for fans’

SUPERCARS has rolled out changes to practice session formats at several upcoming rounds, some of which are aimed at giving trackside fans more action.

The 90-minute Friday sessions at Wanneroo and Symmons Plains have all been rolled back into a single 60-minute session in the afternoon.

For the Perth and Tasmanian rounds, there will now be a pair of 20-minute practice sessions on Saturday and Sunday mornings ahead of each day’s qualifying and racing.

“The changes have been made to ensure fans get to see Supercars on track in both morning and afternoon sessions at the event, rather than just afternoon sessions as was previously planned,” a statement from Supercars said.

It follows the announcement last month that Hidden Valley’s 90-minute session will be trimmed to 60 minutes amid changes to how the Triple Crown trophy is awarded, part of which involved a qualifying session moving to Friday afternoon.

The changes mean that only the upcoming round at Taupō and the night event at Sydney Motorsport Park will feature the extended 90-minute practice sessions in 2024, down from the five rounds it was originally planned to be used at.

The Sandown 500 practice schedule has also been changed with Friday’s running now consisting of three 30-minute sessions, up from the original plan of a pair of 40-minute sessions.

“The Sandown 500 changes have been made to ensure Friday’s on-track action gives teams one additional opportunity on track for either the Championship or co-driver ahead of the first endurance race of the year,” Supercars explained.

The rest of the weekend format for the 60th anniversary of the Sandown 500 will remain the same.
