SuperUtes champ unrelenting on Super2 dream

FRESH from sealing his second straight V8 SuperUte Series crown, Aaron Borg is preparing for another shot at moving up the Australian motorsport ladder.

Not even missing a round nor being up against an increasingly competitive field could stop Borg sealing the 2023 title at the Gold Coast decider on the weekend.

The 33-year-old set up his success by winning each of the four rounds he contested prior to Surfers Paradise.

He missed the August visit to Tailem Bend due to a European trip booked long ago, with Cameron Crick filling in for him there and performing well to take crucial points off Borg’s rivals.

Borg did enough over the Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500 to stave off challenges from Adam Marjoram and Ryal Harris.

“It’s pretty special to win it missing a round but probably more so just with the level of competition this year,” he told V8 Sleuth.

“We’ve got always around 20 cars and they’re all competitive drivers in the field. Like you have got Ryal Harris back for the full season, Dave Sieders did the full season, Marjoram, so to win it against those guys with missing a round is very special.”

The Isuzu ace put his dominance down to one-percenters by his Sieders Racing Team crew and remains keen to test himself at a higher level.

Borg came close to securing a Super2 seat this year in a second Brad Jones Racing entry, and is hoping to land somewhere for the 2024 Dunlop Series.

“I’d love to step up into Super2 but as the normal story is, it’s budget dependent,” he explained.

“We’re working pretty closely with a few partners of ours to try to make that happen.

“By the end of November we should know which way we’re going, whether it is that or going back to SuperUtes again.

“It would be good to just see how we go in (Super2), and if we do a good job, then see where it goes from there.”

Despite such ambitions, he’s vocal in expressing pride at the progress of the V8 SuperUtes category.

“It’s amazing. Luke (Sieders) and Filippa (Guarna) from the series and everyone involved in it work super hard to get it to where it is, and it has continued to grow,” said the 2019 Toyota 86 champion.

“I think next year they have got more people asking for drives than cars available, so I’d imagine they’ll be building a few over the off-season to get it up to that.

“It’s just very, very cool to see the level of drivers that are coming into it and going through.

“Even today, driving back home (to Sydney), there was a random guy when we stopped at a servo that saw me and was talking about the SuperUte cars and how he loves them and he wanted to grab a photo with me and everything like that.

“To have stuff like that happen is very, very cool for the series.”
