Taupō weather curveball looming

THE challenge for drivers and teams to get to grips with Taupō Motorsport Park could be complicated by the prospect of rain.

The ITM Taupō Super400 kicks off tomorrow with a 90-minute practice session for the Repco Supercars Championship ahead of a 200km race on each of Saturday and Sunday.

Light drizzle may arrive during Friday’s proceedings, but it’s Saturday where the forecast looks dicey.

Per New Zealand meteorology service WeatherWatch, there is a 90 percent chance of rain and 15mm predicted for the Taupō region on Saturday.

The bulk of that, at this stage, appears destined for the morning, meaning Qualifying for Race 1 (scheduled for 10:20am local time) could especially be impacted before conditions clear into Sunday.

It’s just another variable which is set to keep competitors on their toes, as Supercars visits a new circuit for the first time since 2018.

Festivities at the central North Island town will ramp up this afternoon with a Track to Town parade.

Supporting Supercars across the April 19-21 event will be Porsche Carrera Cup Australia, NZ Central Muscle Cars, Toyota Gazoo Racing 86 Series NZ and Formula Ford NZ.
