Tempers flare after Carrera Cup pile-up

CARRERA Cup Australia champions David Wall and Alex Davison had to be separated amid a heated fallout to a multi-car crash at the Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500.

Wall was running fifth on Lap 22 of 28 in Race 2 this morning when he found the wall at the exit of Turn 11 following contact with Davison. Wall is under investigation for moving under braking in the incident.

That triggered a pile-up as a train of cars were left with nowhere to go, Davison, Harri Jones, Simon Fallon and Liam Talbot all getting caught up.

A furious Davison approached Wall in his stricken Porsche and had a few choice words for the 2017 champion before slamming the driver’s side door shut and storming off.

Jones then went to check on Wall, and as the latter emerged from his car Davison returned to the scene, appearing to want a second crack.

Jones intervened, pushing Davison away.

The race was red-flagged, with results backdated to the end of Lap 21.

Callum Hedge had held first place, but a five-second penalty hanging over his head for shortcutting the Turn 1/2/3 chicane demoted the Kiwi to 11th.

That elevated Bayley Hall to the win, Jackson Walls to second and Dylan O’Keeffe to third.

Walls now leads the championship by a single point over Hedge.

Wall was classified fourth, while other five-second penalties relegated Davison and Nick McBride to 13th and 18th respectively.

One race is to come at the penultimate round, before the category heads to Adelaide for a decider.

Update: Davison later commented on the incident via social media, denying that he was intending to confront Wall for a second time before Jones’ intervention.

“For right or for wrong, I went and told David what I thought about the incident,” wrote Davison.

“But I absolutely did not go back to have “another crack”… and did not need to be restrained.

“Harri took it upon himself to get involved in a discussion that did not concern him and started pushing me unnecessarily.

“I had no problem and nothing to say at all to Harri apart from asking him to stop pushing me.

“Everyone can think what they want about us having a heated discussion but it was never a physical altercation and was never going to be.

“As for the incident, the stewards concluded David was to blame and handed the appropriate penalty.”

Wall also briefly addressed the situation on his social channels.

“As my dad would have said, it’s character building, son!” he wrote.

“We had great speed but leave with a damaged car and a sore arm.

“Not sure what’s next for us in 2023 we will get Vivian (the car) home and assess what we have.

“I have my views on the incident and I’m sure others do also either way was no need for what took place.”
