Waters sets pace in Gold Coast Practice 2

A last-gasp effort from Cam Waters gave Tickford Racing bragging rights on the opening day of action at the Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500.

The Monster Energy Mustang driver clocked a session best 1:10.7215s moments prior to the chequered flag falling on the 30-minute session.

That knocked Practice 1 pacesetter Will Davison back to second – the Shell Mustang driver having likewise bumped Shane van Gisbergen from the top moments earlier.

Walkinshaw Andretti United’s Chaz Mostert was fourth, ensuring four different teams were separated by less than one tenth of a second.

“It was a little bit wild, scraping all the fences. Probably a bit too close for my liking. But the car is fast,” said Waters.

“We definitely made a few improvements between the practices, so that’s good. We’ll see how we go tomorrow.”

Red flags were called five minutes into the session when Will Brown’s Erebus Commodore stopped on the back straight, its battery flat following alternator failure.

It was an extended stoppage as officials utilised the opportunity to reposition the tyre bundles at the beachside chicane.

The offending bundles had been pushed back from the apexes of the corners for the Porsche Carrera Cup Practice 2 session that preceded the Supercars outing.

Waters had gone fastest just prior to the red flag, clocking a 1:11.0445s aboard his Tickford Racing Mustang.

Tickford was also busy during the red flag, undertaking minor repairs to Waters’ car following a brush with the wall.

Waters again charged after the green flags flew, soon improving his earlier time to 1:10.8925s – the first sub 1:11s lap of the weekend.

Van Gisbergen improved that to 1:10.7416s with six minutes remaining and did not improve late as Davison and then Waters eclipsed him.

Broc Feeney ended his first day tackling the Surfers Paradise Street Circuit aboard a Supercar back in 19th, having been 21st in the opening session.

It was a strong day for David Reynolds, who backed up his sixth place in Practice 1 with fifth in the second outing.

The remainder of the Practice 2 top 10 was filled by Andre Heimgartner, Anton De Pasquale, Nick Percat, Brown (following a battery change) and Mark Winterbottom.
