Wilkinson inducted to Supercars Media Association Hall of Fame

VETERAN broadcaster Garry Wilkinson has been inducted into the Supercars Media Association Hall of Fame during the Repco Bathurst 1000 weekend.

‘Wilko’ was a core part of the Seven Network broadcasts of the Great Race over a 25-year span, in addition to hosting and commentating its motorsport and touring car racing coverage amid a decorated career across radio and television.

He became the Hall of Fame’s 23rd inductee in the Hino Hub in Mount Panorama’s pit lane on Friday afternoon in what is his first visit to the event since 1998, a year that marked his final involvement in the annual Bathurst 1000 broadcast.

“I am just about to click over my 64th year in broadcasting, and my 25 years in motorsport, I had more fun, more excitement and met more great people and friends than the rest put together,” Wilkinson said.

“I couldn’t have survived in motorsport if it wasn’t for the people who provided support, and were not afraid to tell me if I got something wrong.”

“My interest was in the people behind the wheel or the people in the pit crew. It’s the same with any sport I cover; it’s not about the technicalities it is about the sport and the people and personalities.

“Cars don’t turn a wheel without people.”

Wilkinson recently shared the story of his life in broadcasting and assorted tales from his years in motorsport to the V8 Sleuth Podcast polished by Bowden’s Own.
