Broken back no barrier to Bathurst bid

KENNY Habul has declared he’ll be good to go for a shot at a rare Bathurst 12 Hour three-peat as he continues his recovery from a broken back.

Habul was injured in a crash during the lead-up to the 24 Hours of Spa two months ago, only to order a replacement car from his Belgian hospital bed and watch on as Chaz Mostert and co steered his SunEnergy1 Racing team to the Pro-Am class victory.

That continued a stellar run of late, with Habul having won the past two editions of the Bathurst 12 Hour outright.

In February next year, he’ll have the chance to join John Bowe and Jules Gounon as the only three-time outright winners of the event.

“It has been a tough couple of months for me, but now back in the gym every day and making great progress, signing the entry form for next year’s Bathurst 12 hour brought a smile to my face,” said Habul.

“I will be back in the car sometime this year, so I will definitely be fit and ready to go by February and we are coming to win three in a row.

“We would love to give Mercedes-AMG a three-peat, something that has not been done by a manufacturer at the Bathurst 12-hour since Mazda dominated the race in the early ‘90s.”

Habul was the first to officially enter the 2024 event but is yet to announce his driver line-up.

“To win our first 12 Hour a couple of years ago was a dream come true, but to go back-to-back earlier this year in such an amazing finish was something else,” he added.

“Mount Panorama is such a magical place and I am proud to call it my home race of the year.

“We have sprayed and drunk the champagne at Bathurst the last couple of years and we have enjoyed the taste of it.”
