Carrera Cup’s new King of the Mountain

HE came, he saw, he conquered. British ace Harry King’s first dealings with Mount Panorama were nothing short of impressive.

King entered with plenty of runs on the board in the form of Carrera Cup titles in Great Britain and Benelux (Belgium/Netherlands/Luxembourg), not to mention three Supercup race wins this year.

Thrown into arguably the strongest field in Porsche Carrera Cup Australia history, King rose to the occasion.

Racing for EMA Motorsport, the 22-year-old won all three races last weekend and set a Bathurst lap record to put his Aussie counterparts in their place.

“It’s an immense feeling,” said King.

“Doing one win alone on the Friday was good enough but to follow it up with another two and score three wins on the Mountain at Bathurst was a really incredible feeling and I’m super grateful to EMA Motorsport for giving me the tools to do the job.

“We proved our dominance in that race by setting a new lap record so I think we ticked nearly every box that could be ticked.

“This circuit is incredible. I didn’t expect it to be the way it was.

“It’s definitely a big challenge to learn with just a short free practice session and this is one of the highlights of my career so far.”

Fellow cameo drivers Harri Jones and Chris van der Drift finished second and third, respectively, in each race.

GT World Challenge Australia points leader Liam Talbot meanwhile swept the Carrera Cup Pro-Am class in his latest outing substituting for Luke King in the Moutai Porsche.

“I had a lot of cobwebs coming into my first round (at Sandown) when everyone else was in round five, so I felt a bit rusty, but this place is special,” said Talbot.

“I had the win at the 12 Hour, a win in GT and now wins in Carrera Cup – it’s been an unbelievable year here.”

Callum Hedge (Pro) and Sam Shahin (Pro-Am) sit atop the standings entering the penultimate round of the season later this month at Surfers Paradise.
