Chevrolet team bosses welcome Ford breakthrough

THE figureheads of Chevrolet-powered Brad Jones Racing and Triple Eight Race Engineering have welcomed Ford’s drought-breaking victory.

Anton De Pasquale snapped Chevrolet’s 15-race winning streak – the equal third-longest in championship history – by taking out Race 2 of the Townsville 500 on Sunday.

Against a backdrop of parity-related angst, including over a lack of progress made by pre-Townsville aero tweaks, BJR owner Brad Jones and Triple Eight managing director Jamie Whincup indicated the result was good for the sport.

“I think it’s really exciting that you can turn up to a race meeting and not know who is going to win the race,” said Jones, whose lead driver Andre Heimgartner chalked up his fifth podium of the season.

“So we’re getting a lot of new winners, like we did in Darwin, and it’s really good to see Anton get up for this one and get a result.”

Whincup, who is head of the General Motors homologation team, agreed that it was “probably” a good outcome.

“We represent GM so we go out there to try to win every race so it’s never nice when we don’t win, but for the sport it’s probably a good thing, you could say that,” he told V8 Sleuth.

More parity testing is scheduled for this week, as Ford continues to hunt for gains in driveability and engine performance.
