Erebus facing unexpected chassis puzzle for 2024

EREBUS Motorsport’s plans to park its title-winning Camaro have been clouded after the #9 entry crashed by Will Brown in Adelaide was declared a write-off.

Brown was involved in an unfortunate first-lap tangle in the penultimate race of the season, bumped by Anton De Pasquale into the concrete at the exit of Turn 4 and then collected from behind by Shane van Gisbergen.

Erebus worked around the clock to get Brown back on track on Sunday as it sought to clinch the teams’ championship; a mission which it indeed accomplished.

But that may well be the end of the road for EMH06.

“We’ve written off a car this weekend: Will’s chassis probably won’t race again, it’s got too much damage,” Erebus CEO Barry Ryan told V8 Sleuth.

“It’s not at the point where we want to race it, we race cars that are perfect.

“To the standard we want to do it, you would have to cut too much out of the car to make it perfect again. You may as well build a new chassis.”

The timing is less than ideal, given a desire to retire EMH05 – the car which powered Kostecki and Erebus to a breakthrough championship.

“The boys want to park it but we might not have a choice,” said Ryan.

“We haven’t really got a spare car complete yet for Brodie to have a new car next year, so to put that on the shelf without touching it, we’ve got a lot of work.

“And the boys didn’t have any time off last year.

“They’ve already committed to doing it, the rest of the team. I’ve said, ‘if you want to put your arse on the line and your balls to the wall and build two brand-new cars for the start of next year, fine’ but we’ll talk about that next week.”

Erebus was officially presented the drivers’ and teams’ championship trophies at last night’s Supercars Gala Awards.
