Mostert wins Barry Sheene Medal at Supercars Gala

CHAZ Mostert might have just endured the second winless Supercars campaign of his career but he has not finished the year empty-handed.

The Walkinshaw Andretti United star was awarded the prestigious Barry Sheene Medal for best-and-fairest at the Supercars Gala tonight.

It marks the first time in Mostert’s career that he has won the gong, his 2023 co-driver Lee Holdsworth having taken the prize last year.

Mostert has long been a popular figure in pitlane and among the fan base, and while he did not stand on the top step of the podium this year, he ended the season as the highest-ranked Ford driver in the championship in fourth.

The 31-year-old made his main game debut at the 2013 Perth 360 and has since accumulated 87 podiums (including 21 wins) from 324 races across stints at Dick Johnson Racing, Tickford Racing and WAU.

Mostert becomes the fifth driver to have won both the Barry Sheene Medal and the Mike Kable Young Gun Award, joining Marcos Ambrose, Mark Winterbottom, James Courtney and Scott McLaughlin in that club.

Meanwhile, the 2023 Mike Kable Young Gun Award went to Super3 sensation Cameron McLeod.

The grandson of 1987 Bathurst 1000 winner Peter, McLeod proved a standout in terms of pace despite finishing being beaten in the third-tier title race by Jett Johnson and champion Jobe Stewart.

The other key prize which had been unknown going into the night was drivers’ driver.

That went the way of 2023 Supercars champion Brodie Kostecki.
