GODZILLA RETURNS TO HERITAGE TOURING CARS AT SYDNEY CLASSIC

A HOST of iconic Heritage Touring Cars will hit the track this weekend at Sydney Motorsport Park.

The HSCRA’s annual Sydney Classic this year honours the memory of Ron Tauranac by featuring a collection of significant Brabham and RALT race cars penned by the late Australian motorsport legend.

The event, held over this weekend’s Queen’s Birthday long weekend, will also feature night racing on Saturday evening under Sydney Motorsport Park’s permanent lighting system.

For the Heritage Touring Cars, it’s the penultimate round of their 2021 series with an 18-strong entry of cars across both Group C and Group A.

Tony Alford’s GIO Nissan GT-R returns to action, as does son Kyle in their ex-Nissan Motorsport Skyline GTS-R HR31, heading a fleet of well-known Group A machinery.

A pair of Holdens with links to Perkins Engineering will be out in force, with Norm Mogg campaigning his ex-Holden Racing Team Commodore and Jamie McDonald his recently-restored Bob Pearson Pro-Duct VN Commodore, with Adrian Allisey aboard his ex-John Leeson/Garry Willmington VL and Michael LoGiudice’s VK rounding out the Group A Commodore runners.

Willmington’s spectacular Jaguar XJ-S will also be in action in Tony Pallas’ hands while Rick Allen and David Towe will uphold BMW’s fortunes, the former in his ex-Tony Longhurst Benson & Hedges M3 and the latter piloting his ex-JPS Team BMW M3.

A pair of Toyota Corollas will be in action with Craig Foster piloting his ex-Toyota Team Australia AE86 coupe and David Paterson aboard his ex-Bob Holden Sprinter.

The Group C runners will feature Terry Lawlor in his ex-Bob Morris and Bill O’Brien Ford Falcon XD, plus Dom Dimidriadis’ ex-John Goss Ford Falcon XC coupe.

Peter Lucas will be in action in his ex-Terry Shiel Eurocars Mazda RX-7, while Holden will be represented by Glenn Gerstel’s VH Commodore and Steve Axisa’s Torana XU-1, the last of its model to score points in the ATCC.

Among the smaller Group C machinery, Darryl Leslight will pilot his ex-Masterton Homes Ford Capri, Gavin Adamson an Isuzu Gemini and Peter Woods a Toyota Celica.

In addition to the Heritage Touring Cars, the Australian 5 Litre Touring Car Association, Group N, Formula Ford, Invited Sports & Racing, Historic Sports Cars and Formula Vees round out a packed program.
