McLeod out to emulate grandfather’s Bathurst heroics

UPON winning the Mike Kable Young Gun Award, Cameron McLeod set out two clear goals.

To make it into the Repco Supercars Championship, and to conquer the Bathurst 1000 as his grandfather Peter did in 1987 for the Holden Dealer Team.

McLeod might have only finished third in the Super3 standings this year, but he wowed many with his supreme pace that often saw him mixing it in the Super2 upper midfield.

A pair of DNFs at Sandown proved the undoing of his title hopes, one caused by running out of fuel and the other by a first-lap racing incident.

Nevertheless, McLeod did enough to beat Super2 trio Ryan Wood, Cooper Murray and Zach Bates plus Super3 champion Jobe Stewart to the award at last night’s Supercars Gala.

The 18-year-old said he was born into a life in racing, his father Ryan having also been a five-time Bathurst 1000 starter and a Super2 race winner.

“I didn’t really have an option, it was in my blood,” McLeod said on stage at the Gala.

“Obviously I want to continue in my granddad’s steps and win the Bathurst 1000.

“That would be awesome, and just to race in Supercars in general, it’s going to be awesome, so that’s what we’re chipping away at.”

He has already tasted Super2 machinery with the likes of Walkinshaw Andretti United and the Blanchard Racing Team and is eyeing a step up into the second tier for 2024.

“We’re pushing for Super2. My goal is Supercars so the next step obviously is Super2,” said McLeod.

“I just want to keep pushing until we get there. Nothing is getting in my way.”
