Supercars on Tommy Smith’s radar

FIA Formula 3 racer Tommy Smith has admitted Supercars is on his radar for down the track.

But this isn’t your average ‘Driver X fancies a steer of a Supercar’ story.

When Jack Smith hung up his helmet at the end of last season, the paddock scuttlebutt took off with regards to his nephew Tommy one day coming to Supercars.

The well-spoken 21-year-old’s F3 activities are backed by the family SCT business, which also has an ongoing presence in Supercars; Porsche ace Jaxon Evans having taken over at the wheel of its Gen3 Camaro this season.

Make no mistake, Smith’s sights remain very firmly set on the path to Formula 1 right now.

Qualifying has been a shortcoming, the Van Amersfoort Racing driver too often finding himself buried in the pack – including making for a ragged weekend at Albert Park. So, the search for maiden points continues.

“It’s all about qualifying, getting close to that reverse grid would change my weekends,” Smith said at Albert Park.

“That’s my goal, is just to be competitive.”

As for Supercars?

“One day it would be great to get paid to go racing, to be honest, but let’s see,” he said.

“At the moment the goal is just to do the best job I can in Formula 3 and hopefully if I have a good enough year, possibly look at Formula 2.

“But at the moment I’m just looking at the not-so-distant future and then we’ll make a decision…

“I don’t want to try to predict things, but of course I would love to race in Supercars one day if that chance came.”
