Supercars makes parity changes for Townsville

SUPERCARS has announced that it will make a parity change to the Ford Mustang for this weekend’s Townsville 500.

Changes have been made to the rear of the Ford to increase downforce, namely the position, size and angle of the rear wing, and increase the size of the boot spoiler.

The changes comes after it was confirmed that a parity review had been triggered during last month’s Darwin Triple Crown.

It’s understood the review determined that parity had been established during pre-season Vehicle Control Aerodynamic Testing (VCAT) based on agreed-upon ride heights and a performance window.

However, the actual performance window of the cars on track varied under braking conditions, which the changes ahead of Townsville aim to correct.

Supercars has announced that changes will be made to the specifications of the Ford Mustang Vehicle Specification Document (VSD) ahead of this weekend’s NTI Townsville 500.

This decision comes after a thorough review process conducted in accordance with the Supercars Championship regulations.

During the review, the Supercars Head of Motorsport facilitated a meeting between Homologation Teams where data from the Chevrolet Camaro and Ford Mustang was compared using a multi-lap overlay.

The overlay reflected a minor difference in rear downforce of the Mustang and its performance in the braking zone.

To address this, Supercars partnered with D2H for computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis, which revealed that adjustments needed to be made to increase the rear downforce of the Mustang.

The recommended changes involve modifying the position, span, and angle of the rear wing, and increase the size of the boot spoiler on the Ford Mustang.

Supercars CEO Shane Howard said: “Firstly, we would like to thank the Homologation Teams and D2H for their extensive work on this review.

“It required a considerable amount of man hours, expert analysis, and communication to work together to present these adjustments for approval.

“With these changes in place, Supercars is looking forward to racing at this weekend’s NTI Townsville 500.”
